Physical Therapy for Hip and Knee Total Joint Replacements

Mar 25, 2014

The two most commonly performed total joint replacement surgeries are total hip replacements and total knee replacements. These surgeries involve creating an artificial joint and inserting it into the area where the natural joint previously was. Total joint replacements are generally performed as a last case scenario for most patients. This usually happens due to years of arthritis causing pain making it difficult for the patient to use the affected knee or hip.

When having a joint replaced, physical therapy will usually begin the very same day or the next day after. Physical therapy will involve getting up and walking around, usually with a walker or crutches, as soon as possible after the operation. This will encourage getting your strength and range of motion back as quickly as possible. Once healthy enough to leave the hospital, physical therapy will begin in the outpatient setting, which is what we do here.

In outpatient physical therapy at Arvada Sport and Spine Group, you'll strengthen and stabilize the joint and work on getting as much motion in the joint as possible. Strengthening exercises and manual stretching by the physical therapist are a big part of the outpatient physical therapy experience. Your physical therapist will work often with you to get you back on your feet and feeling like the joint is a normal part of your body again.

At Arvada Sport and Spine Group, our physical therapist is an expert in working with joint replacement patients. He has worked in the hospital inpatient system sitting in on these surgeries and treating patients immediately following their surgeries.
