Scoliosis
November 01, 2022Scoliosis is defined as the sideways, also called coronal, curvature of the spine. The diagnosis of scoliosis begins at a curvature measurement of 10 degrees or greater. It is most commonly diagnosed in childhood and can worsen as children grow. Approximately 80 percent of scoliosis cases are considered idiopathic- meaning there is no known cause. While both girls and boys can be diagnosed with scoliosis, it is more common for girls to have a curve that worsens over time. Doctors often use x-rays to monitor the progression of the curve. There are a few ways that we are able to visually look for signs of scoliosis. These include:

Fibromyalgia
February 28, 2022Fibromyalgia can be hard to diagnose because there is not one test that has a marker for the disorder. Practitioners used to diagnose fibromyalgia by finding 11 out of 18 specific tender points on the body, but this method is no longer used based on the reliability of the exam. In order to be diagnosed in present day, a physician typically will use your medical history, imaging, physical exam, and some blood testing. Oftentimes in the history of a fibromyalgia patient, they will experience tiredness, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, depression, head fog, increased pain, and headaches.

Back Pain During Pregnancy
February 07, 2022Having low back pain during pregnancy is very common- and it’s no wonder why- the body has so many changes that happen quite quickly. During pregnancy, a woman’s uterus expands for the growing baby causing an increase in weight and a change in their center of gravity. When more weight is located near the abdomen, this leads to posture changes. Due to the change in center of gravity, many pregnant women compensate by arching their back more, causing increased pressure and strain on the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the low back.

Lower Crossed Syndrome
January 24, 2022A common condition that we see in the office is the lower crossed syndrome, which is often the result of prolonged sitting leading to muscular imbalance. These days, especially as we see the shift to more working from home jobs, many career options involve a lot of sedentary time in front of a computer. Unfortunately, this increased inactivity can cause the weak muscles to continue to get weaker and the tight muscles to shorten and tighten up even further. Lower crossed syndrome occurs as....

A concussion happens when the head and the body move in such a great force to cause shear of the brain inside the skull. Every concussion comes with a whiplash injury as a result. They have the same mechanism of injury: acceleration. The symptoms are often the same as well.

Disc Herniation - Let's Review
September 07, 2021Disc herniations are most often the result of wear and tear. As we age, our discs become less flexible and more prone to injury. Due to this, one of the best treatments for disc injuries is prevention. These measures include maintaining good posture to reduce pressure on the spine and discs, mobilizing the spine to hydrate the discs, lifting properly, and exercising to strengthen trunk and core muscles to help stabilize and support the spine.

Activate Your Glutes
February 23, 2021When it comes to movement, our bodies are masters at compensating. If we are weak, immobile, or dysfunctional in one muscle, joint, or region, chances are your body has found a new way to continue moving. It just might not be the correct way and it may lead to pain, injury, or premature degeneration. Pain is a great indication something in the system is not working the way it should. The dysfunction may indeed be at the site of pain or it might be coming from somewhere else. Limited glute activation is common with those who compensate in their movement.

Morning Backaches: Is It My Bed?
December 07, 2020If you are one of those people who wake up every morning with back pain and stiffness that wasn’t present when you went to bed…..you are definitely not alone. This is a subject that has been researched by chiropractors, physical therapists, occupational therapists as well as other physical medicine specialists for years. If we are waking up in the morning tired and with a sore back, this could be a sign that (a) we are not sleeping on a mattress suitable for our body type, (b) we are not sleeping in a good “neutral” position for our spine and neck, or (c) there could be a mechanical issue in the back that has developed which needs some attention by a healthcare provider.
